Visual Description
You know how everyone is always keen on “thinking out of the box”? Well, with the First Box puzzle by Wil Strijbos you will have to do the opposite: think inside the box, literally.
The puzzle looks like a monolith box made in a pretty cobalt blue color. There are several holes on the sides and a small screw at the top.
There only 2 stages that you need to overcome on your way to solution, but the real challenge here is to understand the mechanism inside the box.
Only when you do that you will be able to solve it, there is no way to actually solve by luck without investing hours and hours of your precious time.
Main Features
The first stage is quite simple and you will probably solve it in the first few minutes of the process: you need to find the tool hidden inside the box to move forward and actually open it.
On a side note, I’d like to mention that sequential puzzles that actually make you discover the tools hidden inside them to solve the next stage is just amazing feature.
After you find the tool to open the box, the hardest point begins. There are multiple things that are rattling inside the box. Will you be able to understand how many and what do they do. What are the point of the smiley/sad faced cylinders hidden inside the holes on each side? What does the screw do?
You better prepare a clean sheet of paper and start visualizing the architecture inside that box or you can also see our tips below.
Conclusion
Amazing and hard puzzle that is fascinating to solve. The best puzzle in Wil Strijbos’ lineup so far. The excitement from its solution matches only the one I got from solving the Lotus Puzzle.
Marvelous and fantastic quality and certainly the reasonably priced puzzle considering the materials and mechanism used.

Assembly Tips
- Listen closely to what happens inside.
- The screw on the top can be unscrewed to discover the allen (hex) key inside. You need to use it to open the box.
- The cylinders with sad/smiley faces on each side need to be in a correct position: that will allow the screw to be pushed on the other side with your allen key and open the box.
