Visual Description

Ugears V-series has caught my eye from the very beginning. It seemed that with the new roster of these amazingly detailed 3D Wooden Puzzles,  Ugears wanted to elevate the game to the next level. To make wooden models bigger, better, and more complex than ever.

I have to say they have managed to accomplish that in many ways with these models.

V-Express steam train is undoubtedly a fantastic wooden puzzle that has a sophisticated see-through design, amazing detalization, and challenging, fair, and demanding assembly.

The quality of this model is one step higher than usual Ugears models, and the assembly is quite smooth, albeit lengthy. It requires a colossal amount of skill and focus, but the result will be gratifying.

Furthermore, this 3D Wooden Puzzle is also compatible with the steam engine and other train-centered models made by Ugears (Train station, for example), and that makes it a part of the most impressive set in the roster.

Main Features

The model design and see-through skeleton-like composition allows you to see the shacks and gears, the flywheel, and the cylinder-piston arrangement; It looks like a real locomotive when in motion.

V-Express is operated by a self-propelled motor, allowing the Train to move on its own.  A single wind of the Train engine produces enough power to run up to 13 feet (4 meters).

The mechanism can work with three different modes: forward, back, and idle.  The backward mode allows the train to automatically hook up with the Tender when rolling into that, which is incredible.

The Tender itself deserves separate attention. Despite the fact it was designed as a part of V-Express, it can be an independent model with its unique features.

The Tender’s design is based on the past century coal car; it is a fully operating and equipped with moving elements like a locking hatch and dropping sides. You can store something inside to transport within your train.

Comparison with Steam Locomotive by Ugears

ugears STEAM LOCOMOTIVE WITH TENDER

V-Express is a big brother of a Steam Locomotive as it is better in almost every way: the number of details, the mechanism, and the quality of the model itself. V-Express is better thought out, but at the same time, it is fully compatible with Steam Locomotive as both models are a part of 1 big train set, so it is helpful to have both in your collection if you are fond of trains.

Comparison with Prime Steam Express by ROKR

Prime Steam Express Model Wooden 3D Puzzle by ROKR

RORK model is certainly great looking, but it lacks functionality, and most importantly — tracks. The RORK Prime Steam Express is a display puzzle, with great assembly and exciting tricks up its sleeve, but it does not have that “fun playability” that V-Express has.

Comparison with R17 Locomotive by WoodTrick

Locomotive R17 Wooden 3D Puzzle by WoodTrick

These two models are almost equal. I’d say the choice will be between the different design solutions, so I think — to each it’s own. V-Express by Ugears can be paired with the additional set of rails and the railway station model (that can also be assembled), so it provides for some extra playtime variety. R17 Locomotive is a great standalone model that might appeal better for you if you like the design.

Conclusion

A great addition to the V-Series by Ugears and one of the most well-thought-out models of the brand.

Certainly, pricey, but it is not a high cost for the number of features and details that this model brings.

Fantastic assembly with a lot of parts that are challenging.
