Visual Description
Every respected 3D Wooden Puzzle brand must have a train in its roster. Furthermore, the train needs to be unique, at least in some way, and better, compared to the competitors.
Today, we will see what’s up with R17 Locomotive by WoodTrick and how it is different from other trains from different brands.
First of all, the most fantastic thing that caught my eye from the very beginning — the number of details in the mechanism and the design of the train that allows you to see every cog and turntable inside the moving train.
The front of the engine is also adorned with the typical locomotive triangle-shaped snowpiercer and prominent bell and whistle.
Apart from that, the body of the locomotive is completely see-through with moving parts visible inside.
Main Features
The are several parts that can be moved or opened withing the train:
- The cabin roof can be opened to see the inside of the cabin with the passenger seats and windows.
- The engine doors can be opened.
- The small ladder at the engine can be pulled back.
A small set of rails is also included in the package with the train. That means that upon completing the assembly — you will be able to test your creation right away.
The small rubber band mechanism can propel the train down the rails.
The overall quality of the parts and the assembly is excellent. The skeleton design of the engine can seem shaky at times, so one should be very careful with small details.
When the train is assembled — the whole cinstruction seems very firm.
The assembly itself is quite tricky with a lot of small parts and complex mechanisms that will be quite hard to assemble. The whole trick is to be patient and take frequent breaks to avoid burn out.
Ideally, It would be great to have 3-4 for sessions 1-1.5 hours each day — that way, you will be able to stay focused and make little to no mistakes during the assembly.
There are no wind-up mechanisms or any kind of automations so you will have to adjust the date every day by yourself like the good old days.
Comparison with Steam Locomotive by Ugears
R17 is undoubtedly a more high-end model that Steam Locomotive. The latter is one of the first models made by Ugears, so there is no surprise; it lacks the detail and complexity comparing to the R17.
Comparison with Prime Steam Express by ROKR
Prime Steam Express is unquestionably a great competitor, but it let’s now forget it is more of a display model. It does not have tracks included, and the usability of this model is minimal. If you are looking for a toy, as well as a proper assembly — look no further than R17.
Comparison with V-Express Locomotive by Ugears
These two models are almost equal. I’d say the choice will be between the different design solutions, so I think — to each it’s own. V-Express Locomotive by Ugears can be paired with the additional set of rails and the railway station model (that can also be assembled), so it provides for some extra playtime variety.

A fantastic model with high-end mechanism and challenging yet fair assembly.

- You don’t have to use glue as the parts hold firmly together. On the other hand, if you wish to keep the pieces intact forever – the adhesive can be used. Of course, caution is advised, and you have to remember not to apply glue on moving parts.
